Well, it sounds like you did do it the hard way.  If you're running SuSE 9.0, 
all you need to do is download the RPMs and click on 'Install' when Yast2 
offers to install them.  No need to muck around with compilers, linkers, etc 
at all.  Building from source is only needed if you're tracking the 'bleeding 
edge' developments from CVS, or using a non-SuSE system (and, hopefully, some 
kind souls will eventually step forward to maintain a binary package for some 
of those 'other' distros as well.).
