[RDD] Mysql problem

I wiped everything out and deleted the partition with fdisk
and created 3 partitions on the hard disk
1 for windows xp pro and 1 for linux and 1 for linux swap
it works well and lilo will boot either windows or linux
I then set up mysql and jack and of course rivendell
the problem is, the rivendell daemons cannot connect to mysql
and rdadmin cannot connect to mysql
mysql is up and running because from the command line i can connect
using   mysql -u root -p
mysql then asks for my password,  I put it in and then I get the
mysql prompt
I then type quit; and mysql replies bye

So I know mysql is working so I must have something misconfigured

I had it all working before I made the changes to accomodate windows

the caed.log and rdcatchd log tells me what I already know

It cannot connect to mysql, what it does not tell me is why
